The setup
A castle is in the middle of a seven-day Harvest Court, and the king's marriage is a polite arrangement run from a distance. The queen assigns her prettiest servant to his wardrobe, perhaps without telling the servant how slowly to work. In episode 1 the servant fumbles a request, a courtier threatens to discipline her and the king stops him with a warning of his own. Nobody has ever protected her before. That night he tells her to be waiting in his bed at midnight. Episode 2 brings her from the kitchens to his chamber, where she admits she has watched him for a year and he reminds her it could get them both hanged. When the queen knocks, the door stays locked.
Why it earns its number
The tenderest entry on the Fantasy worlds shelf: a class gap, a small act of kindness that starts it all and a queen whose spies are the walls. It is a romance first, with the danger supplied by the court, and the line he crosses is as much social as anything else.
Who should collect it: For anyone who loves candlelit castle drama: forbidden glances, a locked door and a king who finally has someone worth lying for.
