Our Surprise for Mom!

The setup

Mom's fiftieth birthday is Saturday, and her daughter has a plan: forty guests, one secret and a stepdad who is the only person able to keep Mom away from home. They also call in Aunt Sarah, Mom's estranged stepsister, who has not spoken to the family for years. Planning means long whispers in a quiet kitchen, with the stepdad trying to act normal and failing. By the end of episode 1 the daughter admits she has noticed him noticing her and suggests the guest room. Episode 2 turns party prep into a private fitting, with her confessing that she took on the party so she would have a whole week in his orbit. Then someone calls from the hallway: Mom is home early.

Why it earns its number

Party-planning farce meets forbidden temptation. The ticking clock is a birthday on Saturday, which gives the story a deadline and a comic backdrop, and Aunt Sarah looms as a wild card. The stepdad, nervous and endearing, is the heart of it.

Who should collect it: For anyone who thinks the best surprise parties come with a secret agenda and a very good outfit.
