Dad Left My Step-Mom

The setup

Tyler is twenty-two, and his father has just walked out on Josie, his stepmother, for someone newer. Tyler drives home for two days to sit with her through the worst of it. Episode 1 finds Josie wondering aloud, between complaints about years of dedicated yoga that nobody noticed, what he honestly thinks of her looks. Tyler, who calls her Jo, answers the only way he can, and a shaky hand gives him away. She asks him to stay the weekend, since she doesn't want to sleep alone. In episode 2 she tells him he's been watching her for three summers, and the time for politeness is over.

Why it earns its number

It sits on four shelves at once: Stepmom, Cuckold, Taboo and Quick finish. What sets it apart is its sad, honest start: a woman whose husband has left her and who lets herself be wanted again, with Tyler there to listen first.

Who should collect it: For viewers who like a comfort-turns-complicated setup with a wounded heroine, and who root for her to feel wanted again.
