The setup

At a family dinner, Kate announces that she trusts her husband Dan so much she'd hand him a hall pass; he'd never cash it in. Everyone laughs except her mother, Margot, who corners Dan in the kitchen a few minutes later with an idea. Episode 1 is a polite interrogation: would he or wouldn't he, and how fast his answer came, which Margot finds interesting. Kate wanders in asking about coffee, while Margot mentions that tomorrow night's book club is a good time to see whether he can keep saying no.
