My Stepsister Plays Hard To Get

The setup

Kayla is mid-chant at a turtle rally when her stepbrother Cole leans on his car horn, wrecking the speech and starting an argument. Their parents have left town for the week, Cole has been told to look after her, and Kayla announces that he's a pervert and not remotely her type. He gets caught looking anyway. She reads out a list of reasons no girl likes him, a seagull makes an unfortunate contribution, and by the time she phones her friend Tess to complain about the staring she's forced to admit it was a bit cute. Later episodes take in a car ride, a load of dishes and a night out, until a neighbor drops by and wants in on the fun.

Why it earns its number

Kayla's denials are the engine here: every insult makes the next scene more charged, and the banter keeps the pace brisk. Add parents away all week and a neighbor who crashes the party, and a two-person tease turns into a crowded one.

Who should collect it: For anyone who likes a slow burn built on insults, a stubborn stepsister and a stepbrother who refuses to give up.
