My Goth Stepsister

The setup

It starts with an accident in a doorway and a job interview twenty minutes away. In episode 1 a goth stepsister spills iced coffee on her stepbrother's only clean shirt, swears it wasn't on purpose, and the household takes sides depending on who's talking. Later she tells a friend how much she hates him, adding that his staring was kind of cute. Episode 2 opens with a debt. His father needs the car cleaned, he points out she still owes him for the morning, and the repayment plan involves a hose, plenty of attitude and a challenge she says she would never take.

Why it earns its number

The goth stepsister is a darker change of pace from the sunny archetypes elsewhere on the stepsister shelf: sarcastic, resentful and perfectly aware of her power in an argument. The coffee spill gives the story a comic start, and the repayment dynamic turns every scene into a negotiation.

Who should collect it: For fans of grudge-fueled stepsibling banter who like a heroine sarcastic, dressed in black and never first to apologize.
