I Picked Up a Hitchhiker

The setup

The driver is an ordinary guy in a beat-up pickup who has never had a woman like this in the passenger seat. She's hitchhiking on an empty desert road, headed home, and has just left the boyfriend (an ex, she says) fifty miles behind her. She calls him an ex, then corrects herself. The sun is brutal, she's sweaty, there's one motel and one room left, and she tells him she doesn't bite. Episode 2 brings a motel that's far from five stars, a phone call that ends things for good with a guy named Tyler, and a request for a towel that gets less polite about distance.

Why it earns its number

Road-trip setups are rare on the shelf, which is half the charm: wide desert, one truck, one motel and a man who spends the whole story outmatched. The mood is gentle comedy with a flirt who has already decided how the night ends.

Who should collect it: For anyone who likes a low-key road story, a modest hero and a hitchhiker who takes the wheel anyway.
