The setup

Ethan is a human prisoner in a dragon queen's palace until she chooses him as her newest plaything. Queen Veyra orders him to say her name and warns him not to break the way her earlier favorites did. Episode 1 is the first night: a mortal who tries to say no, a monarch who doesn't hear it, and a court that has noticed who keeps going missing. Episode 2 steps into daylight, and Veyra treats him like dirt in front of her court, hurling threats at anyone who touches what is hers. In private, she reminds him exactly whose he is. She is a ruler hiding something, and he is learning that obedience can be negotiated.

Why it earns its number

The human holds the weak hand and the queen holds the whole palace, so every scene has two layers: public contempt and private favors. It plays like a gothic romance with a throne room, the pace set by a power dynamic that keeps flipping. Dark, dramatic and a long way from a beach house.
